Cold Gold

Frozen foods usually get a bad rap, but it is possible to eat these foods and still eat healthy. Here are five ways you can incorporate foods from the freezer into your daily diet.

Entrées

Watch the fat in frozen dinners. Aim for no more than nine grams per 300 calories (three grams or less saturated). I like Kashi Lemon Rosemary Chicken, with whole grains. The Healthy Choice line is low in fat and sodium. Organic Bistro Chicken Citron packs in 31 grams of protein in fewer than 500 calories.

Pizza

Finding good choices here is tough, since most frozen pies are loaded with fat and salt. Keep sodium to 600 milligrams or less per 300 calories. Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza comes without cheese and only nine grams of fat per serving. I add low-fat cheese before baking, as well as a few extra slices of fresh vegetables for a vitamin boost.

Breakfast

Choose foods with at least three grams of fiber per meal, which will keep you feeling full. Kashi Go Lean Waffles, with eight grams of protein, 33 grams of carbs, and six grams of fiber, are great postrun. Top Van's Wheat Free Flax Waffles, made with flaxseed, with yogurt and fruit.

Vegetables

You can't go wrong with frozen vegetables as long as you buy ones without added sauces or cheese. Choose brightly colored stir-fry mixes with red peppers, edamame, carrots, onions, and broccoli, which are packed with vitamins. Steam vegetables for a side, or mix with canned soup to boost fiber.

Fruit

Your best bet here is to go with a frozen fruit mix. A berry medley of blackberries, blueberries, and strawberries is loaded with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C and has a mere 70 calories per cup. Toss berries over hot or cold cereal, mix into plain yogurt or kefir, or bake with whole oats, walnuts, and a honey topping.
